G2 Drivers & Speeding

The police nor the courts are required to tell G2 drivers of the hidden penalties for speeding tickets.

Class G2 drivers are considered to be “Novice Drivers” by the Ministry of Transportation.

Novice drivers have lower thresholds for speeding tickets and demerit points, that will suspend the drivers licence.

Speeding tickets can dramatically affect G2 drivers, as any conviction will result in two “lines” on the driving record.

Class G2 drivers are considered “Novice Drivers” under Ontario Regulation 340/94.

Novice drivers have strict penalties with lower thresholds from class G drivers, including thirty (30) day licence suspensions for:

• speeding more than 29km/h over the limit
• accumulating four (4) or more demerit points
• accumulating six (6) or more demerit points

Where a G2 Driver has their licence suspended the insurance rates will be dramatically affected.

Any speeding ticket for more than 29km/h has a licence suspension for G2 Drivers.

Where a G2 Driver is convicted of any traffic ticket the insurance will be dramatically affected for three (3) years.

Traffic tickets with four (4) demerit points have thirty (30) day licence suspensions for G2 Drivers.

Where a G2 Driver accumulates six (6) demerit points (e.g. gets two three point tickets) the driver loses their licence for thirty (30) days.

If the driver goes over the demerit point limit a second time, the suspension shall be for ninety (90) days.

Upon conviction of the ticket, the Ministry of Transport will send a letter to the registered address advising the Novice driver to surrender their drivers licence at a Service Ontario location.

The licence suspension starts from the date the driver surrenders the licence.

Any ticket for more than fifteen (15) kilometres over the limit has demerit points.

Speeding tickets and licence suspensions affect insurance rates.

Where a G2 Driver receives any speeding ticket and a conviction is registered, the ticket will affect the insurance rates for 3 years.

Where the driver receives a speeding ticket for more than 29km/h and is suspended, the insurance will increase into high risk insurance rates.

The conviction will put two “strikes” against the driver, because:

• they were convicted of speeding
• they received a drivers licence suspension

The police nor the courts advise G2 drivers that convictions over 29km/h have a licence suspensions.
